India's 1st indigenous surgical tele-robotic system performed heart surgeries

  • India successfully performed its first tele-robotic cardiac surgery using the domestic SSI Mantra system, developed by SSI Ltd.
  • On January 9 and 10, a complete endoscopic coronary artery bypass and internal mammary artery harvesting were performed.
  • It took place across 286 km, marking the largest physical separation between an operating surgeon and a patient in India.
  • Two teams performed surgeries at Manipal Hospital in Jaipur and Gurugram, responsible for the robotic system.
  • The technology, with a latency of 35-40 ms, facilitated the instant transmission of surgeon orders from Gurugram to Jaipur's.
  • It offers benefits like shorter operating times, increased accuracy, reduced incision damage, blood loss, quicker recovery etc.
  • SSI Mantra system has been granted regulatory approval by Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in India.

 

Alzheimer's Disease Treatment with Ayurveda

  • Bose Institute's group, led by Professor Anirban Bhunia, is exploring therapies targeting amyloid beta aggregation to combat Alzheimer on January 19, 2025.
  • Amyloid protein accumulation in the brain forms plaques, leading to memory loss and cell death in Alzheimer's disease.
  • Study published in Biochemistry revealed natural chemicals from Lasunadya Ghrita synthesize peptides in breaking down amyloid beta.
  • Lasunadya Ghrita, an Ayurvedic medication used to treat mental diseases, contains non-toxic chemicals.
  • The study employed two methods to prevent amyloid beta aggregation including chemically synthesizing peptides.
  • It also utilized repurposing traditional Ayurvedic treatment, Lasunadya Ghrita.
  • People with Alzheimer's disease may still maintain certain abilities like reading, storytelling due to unaffected brain parts.
