India’s Progressive Path in the Administration of Criminal Justice System

  • The Ministry of Law and Justice's Department of Legal Affairs hosted a conference on April 21, 2024.
  • It took place in the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in Janpath, New Delhi, with the theme "India's Progressive Path in the Administration of Criminal Justice System."
  • The backdrop of the conference was the enactment of three criminal laws, which would go into effect on July 1, 2024.
  • These laws are called Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023.
  •  Justice DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India, was the Chief Guest of the event.

FIDE Candidates 2024

  • D. Gukesh, the 17-year-old wonder from India in the game of chess, emerged as the only leader of the FIDE Candidates 2024 before the last round in Toronto, (Canada) on April 21, 2024.
  • After a string of precise movements, Gukesh defeated Iran's Alireza Firouzja in the 13th and penultimate round of the Open tournament while playing with the white pieces.
  •  In the final round, D. Gukesh, with 8.5 points, will face off against Hikaru Nakamura of the USA, using black pieces.
  • D. Gukesh's victory would also require a draw and a peace agreement between Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia and Fabiano Caruana of the United States.
  • Other matches saw Fabiano Caruana, the top seed; defeat another Indian, R. Praggnanandhaa in 89 moves.

 

Indian Wrestlers Clinched Paris Olympic 2024 Quota

  • At the Asian Olympic qualifiers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on April 21, 2024, India's top female wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat, Anshu Malik, and Reetika Hooda, secured their spot in the Paris Olympics 2024.
  •  In the 50 kg division, Phogat defeated Laura Ganikyzy of Kazakhstan 10-Nil, and in the 57 kg division, Anshu triumphed 11-Nil against Laylokhon Sobirova of Uzbekistan.
  •  In the 76 kg class, Reetika defeated Chinese Taipei's Hui T. Chang 7-Nil.
  • The victor of the Asian Games and the Commonwealth, Phogat, defeated the Kazakh wrestler by using superior technical skills. Next up for Phogat is Uzbekistan's Aktenge Keunimjaeva.

 

Barcelona Open 2024 (Tennis)

  • The 500-point ATP Barcelona Open, a clay-court competition with 500 points, was held in Barcelona, Spain, from April 15–21, 2024.
  • With a victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, world No. 6 Casper Ruud of Norway won the ATP Barcelona Open 500 singles championship.
  • Casper Ruud had won 10 ATP 250 titles before Barcelona, but this was his first victory in a major 500-ranked event, where the victor receives a hefty 500 ranking point.
  • Rafael Nadal, a Spanish tennis legend, is noteworthy for having won the Barcelona Open an incredible 12 times, setting a record for most victories.
  • The Argentine team of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni won the doubles competition. They overcame the team of Jan Zielinski (Poland) and Hugo Nys (Monaco).

  •  The 25-year-old Indian Army rower set a fantastic time of 7 minutes and 1.27 seconds to win the 2000-meter race and meet the quota.

Tamil Nadu Jumped to Top on Apple’s India Push

  • The state of Tamil Nadu has surpassed Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh as the leading state in terms of electronic products exports in the fiscal year 2023-24 as of April 21, 2024.
  • Between 2022–23 and 2023–24, the state's exports increased by 78% to $5.37 billion.
  • Overcoming a $9 billion target established by the state a few months ago, this represents almost 33% of the nation's overall exports.
  •  This is mostly due to multinational corporations like Apple implementing the "China Plus One" strategy.
  • Consequently, its suppliers, Tata Electronics and Salcomp, as well as contractors, Foxconn and Pegatron, have contributed to the rise of Tamil Nadu as the Country’s electronic hub in 2023.
