Women’s Asia Cup Title won by Sri Lanka

  • Sri Lanka Women won their first T20 Asia Cup by defeating India by 8 wickets in the final held at Dambulla on July 28, 2024.
  • India set a target of 166 runs, but Sri Lanka chased it down successfully with significant contributions from captain Chamari Athapaththu, Harshita Samarawickrama, and Kavisha Dilhari.
  • Chamari Athapaththu scored 61 before being dismissed in the 12th over.
  • Earlier, India batted first after winning the toss and posted a total of 165 for 6 in 20 overs, thanks to a half-century from Smriti Mandhana and useful innings from Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh.
  • Harshita Madavi was named Player of the Match, while Chamari Athapaththu received the Player of the Series award.

Manu Bhaker

  • Manu Bhaker secured the bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol event, as the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal at the Paris Olympic Games on July 28, 2024.
  • This was also India's first medal in any sport at Paris 2024 and the fifth Olympic medal in shooting for the country.
  • India had previously won shooting medals in three consecutive Olympics from Athens 2004 to London 2012 but had not won in the next two Games.
  • The 22-year-old Bhaker scored 221.7 in the final, finishing third. Oh Ye Jin from the Republic of Korea won gold with a record 243.2, while her compatriot Yeji Kim took silver with 241.3.

 

Mandisa Maya

  • South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mandisa Maya as the nation's first female Chief Justice as of July 28, 2024, effective from September 1, 2024.
  • Currently serving as Deputy Chief Justice,  Mandisa Maya is a trailblazer, having been the first Black woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Appeal.
  •  She previously held the role of Judge President at the Supreme Court of Appeal, South Africa’s second-highest court, before advancing to the Constitutional Court.
  • Her career includes milestones such as being the first Black woman to become a judge there and the first woman to serve as Deputy President and then President of the court.

 

Manoj Mittal

  • Manoj Mittal has assumed the role of Chairman and Managing Director of the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) following his appointment by the Government on July 28, 2024.
  • Manoj Mittal brings a wealth of experience to the position, with a career spanning over 33 years in the financial services industry.
  •  Before his new role at SIDBI, he served as the Managing Director of the Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI).
