5 languages granted the status of Classical Language

ANNA DARPAN Initiative launched by FCI

Joint Venture between Israel Aerospace and Bharat Electronics (India & World)

  • Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna defense PSU, and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) launched a joint venture called BEL IAI AeroSystems Private Ltd on October 3, 2024.
  • Based in Delhi, this venture will provide long-term product support for the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) systems used by India’s defense forces.
  • This partnership highlights the ongoing collaboration between BEL and IAI on strategic initiatives, enhancing India’s defense capabilities in line with the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision.
  •  The MRSAM, co-developed by IAI and DRDO, is an advanced air and missile defense system currently in use by the Indian Air Force, Army, Navy, and Israeli forces.

 

First Diagnostic Test for Mpox approved by WHO

  • The World Health Organization approved the Alinity m MPXV assay to improve global Mpox testing access, as cases of the viral infection rise, particularly in outbreak areas on October 3, 2024.
  • Mpox, which can cause severe health issues, was declared a public health emergency of international concern by the WHO in August 2024, following increased cases, especially in Africa.
  • India has reported 30 cases, and 35 labs in the country are equipped to test for Mpox. However, African nations face challenges due to limited testing facilities and delays in confirming cases.
  • WHO advises using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) tests to confirm Mpox, and the Alinity m MPXV test is a real-time PCR that detects the virus’s DNA in skin lesions, requiring skilled lab professionals for accurate results.

New Method of Retinal Treatment developed in IIT Madras (Health and Nutrition)

  • Researchers at the IIT Madras have introduced innovative techniques for treating eye issues such as retinal tears and diabetic retinopathy, which affect around 11 million individuals in India, as of October 3, 2024.
  • Their approach employs mild laser-induced convection to expedite and enhance treatment delivery to the retina.
  • Through computer simulations and practical experiments, they found that gentle heating significantly shortens the time needed for drugs to reach effective concentrations in the retina.
  • It reduces the usual 12-hour diffusion period to just 12 minutes. Their findings, published in the Wiley Heat Transfer Journal, will also be presented at the ICCHMT conference.

 

First ever Leopard Census in Odisha (Environment and Ecology)

  • Odisha's first state-sponsored leopard census, released on October 3, 2024, recorded 696 leopards in various forest areas.
  •  The Similipal Tiger Reserve and surrounding regions host the highest number, around 200, while the Satkosia landscape ranks second with 150 leopards.
  • Additionally, 70 - 80 wild leopards were found in the Hirakud, Redhakhol, and Sambalpur areas, and 40 were spotted in the Sunabeda and Khariar forests.
  • Notably, 45% of Odisha's leopard population resides outside protected zones.
  • The survey, conducted across 47 forest divisions, used methods such as tracking pugmarks, scats, scrapes, and vocalizations to detect leopards.
