UN reports on acute malnutrition

  • UNICEF on January 10, 2025 estimates that in 2024, around 3 million Sudanese children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition.
  • According to UN-supported Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), five regions of Sudan are experiencing famine.
  • Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Army have been at war in Sudan for 20 months, causing great humanitarian suffering.
  • Tens of thousands of people have died and almost 12 million have been displaced because of the fighting.
  • Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has suspended operations at a major hospital in Sudan's capital due to violent attacks.
  • UNICEF Sudan's Head of Advocacy and Communication, Eva Hinds, has highlighted the severe malnutrition issue.
  • The ongoing conflict in Sudan underscores the urgent need for international aid for displaced individuals and starving children.

 

INTERPOL has issued its first silver notice for asset recovery

  • INTERPOL launched its first Silver Notice on January 10, 2025, as part of a pilot initiative to identify laundered assets across borders.
  • Silver Notice aims to assist nations in tracing assets such as real estate, bank accounts, and companies linked to illegal activities etc.
  • It allows each of the 52 participating nations, including India, to submit up to 500 Silver Notice requests during the pilot phase.
  • Silver Notices' personal and financial information will be kept private and not shared with the public.
  • INTERPOL 's General Secretariat will review each Silver Notice to ensure compliance with its Constitution.
  • INTERPOL reports that 99% of global criminal assets remain unrecovered, so notice aim to dismantle these illegal earnings to reclaim them.
  • The Silver Notice pilot project, approved by INTERPOL's General Assembly in 2023, is expected to operate until November, 2025.

 

United States has imposed aggressive sanctions on Russian oil

  • On January 10, 2025, US imposed sanctions on 160 oil ships, 2 major Russian oil producers, and firms involved in Russian oil industry.
  • Key companies sanctioned are Surgutneftegas and Gazprom Neft, which export over 970000 barrels of oil daily in 2024.
  • Following the imposed sanctions, Brent oil futures surged beyond $80 per barrel due to concerns about supply disruptions.
  • Sanctions have led to tighter inspections and disruptions in oil transit, quadrupling the number of oil ships.
  • US ha also imposed sanctions on Shandong United Energy Pipeline Transportation Co. Ltd., a Chinese operator.
  • US has also imposed sanctions on Russian insurance firms Ingosstrakh and Alfastrakhovanie Group, so oil tankers doesn’t get insured.
  • US petroleum service businesses are obligated to cease operations in Russia by February 27, 2025.

  • Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported on January 10, 2025 that global warming limit was breached for the first time in 2024.
  • Global mean temp. in 2024 was over 1.5°C higher than pre-industrial average, marking the first recorded increase in history.
  • El Niño, originating in June 2023, significantly contributing to the 2024 temperature increase.
  • In 2024, the average annual sea surface temperature (SST) over extrapolar seas reached a record high of 20.87°C.
  • From 2015 to 2024, every year was one of the ten hottest on record, indicating a consistent rise in global temperatures.
  • The COP29 discussions in Baku, Azerbaijan, failed to reach a consensus on a financial package to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Rising global temperatures pose a risk to developing economies, as they require increased resources to mitigate climate change.

  • Smriti Mandhana became the fastest Indian woman to score 4000 runs in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) on January 10, 2025, during India's match against Ireland.
  • She is the 15th woman in the world and the second Indian woman, after Mithali Raj, to reach the 4000-run milestone in ODIs.
  • She contributed 41 runs off 29 balls in India's chase of 239 against Ireland, forming a 70-run partnership with Pratika Rawal.
  • Mandhana is the third-fastest woman in the world and the first Indian woman to reach the milestone in less than 100 innings.
  • In 2024, Mandhana set a record for the most international runs by a female cricket player.
  • Mithali Raj leads India in ODIs with 7805 runs, while Mandhana is ranked second.

  • According to President Droupadi Murmu, Indian diaspora's ties to their native country are based on a common heritage, culture etc.
