IMF Approved Loan for Bangladesh

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the release of $689 million in the second tranche of the $4.7 billion loan package allocated for Bangladesh.
  • The Washington-based lender has advised Bangladesh to continue to focus on containing inflation and rebuilding external resilience.
  • The multilateral lender suggested a calibrated monetary policy tightening, supported by a neutral fiscal stance.
  • The IMF board approved the $4.7 billion loan in January, 2023.

Discovery of Giant Pliosaur Skull

  • A remarkable discovery on South West England’s Dorset Jurassic Coast on December 10, 2023 has unveiled a giant pliosaur skull.
  • The discovery provided unprecedented insights into the fearsome marine predator that inhabited the oceans 150 million years ago.
  • The 2-meter-long fossil is among the most complete pliosaur skulls ever found, boasting 130 razor-sharp teeth. Which can deliver lethal bites with a single strike.
  • Pliosaur’s powerful bite force is estimated at about 33000 newtons, surpassing even saltwater crocodiles.

 

'Goral' Found in the Himalayan Region (Ecology)

  • A mammal named 'Goral' found in the Himalayan region has been seen in Valmiki Tiger Reserve on December 10, 2023.
  • It is a bovid species native to the Himalayas and its scientific name of 'Goral' is Nemorhadus.
  • This species is found in the Himalayas in Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, southern Tibet, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh in India.
  • It has been included in the IUCN Red List and in Schedule 3 of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

First-Ever Khelo India Para Games begun (Sports News)

  • The first-ever Khelo India Para Games kicked off in New Delhi on December 10, 2023.
  • More than 1,400 participants from across 32 states and Union Territories including Services Sports Control Board are participating in the 8-day event.
  • The Para athletes will compete for honours in 7 disciplines including athletics, shooting, archery, football, badminton, table tennis and weight lifting.
  •  Khelo India Para Games aim to provide opportunities for aspiring para-athletes to showcase their skills and develop their career in para-sports.

 

India and England T20 Match Series 2023 (Cricket)

  • In Women's Cricket, India defeated England by five wickets in the third and final T20 International at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on December 10, 2023.
  • Chasing the target of 127 runs, the women’s Indian team achieved the score for the loss of five wickets in 19 overs.
  • Earlier, batting first after winning the toss, England posted 126 in the stipulated 20 overs, before they were all out in the last ball of the innings.
  • The visitors (England) have clinched the series, 2-1. They defeated India by 38 runs in the first match and beat them by 4 wickets in second T20 match.

 

Guwahati Masters 2023  (Tennis) 

  • Guwahati Masters was a badminton tournament which took place at the Sarju Sarai Indoor Sports Complex, Guwahati, Assam from December 5 to 10, 2023.
  • The men's singles title in this tournament was won by Indonesian player Johannes Sot Marcelino.
  • The women's singles title was won by Lalinrat Chaiwan of Thailand.
  • The women's doubles title was won by India's Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto.
