Anti- LGBTQ Bill Passed by Ghana

  • The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values measure, a contentious anti-LGBTQ measure, was adopted by Ghana's parliament and is scheduled to be signed into law on March 1, 2024.
  • Due of its severe penalties for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (or queer) LGBTQ people, this legislation has generated discussion and criticism.
  • The bill seeks to control human sexual rights and preserve traditional Ghanaian family values.
  •  It makes identifying as a member of the LGBTQ community illegal and carries a maximum three-year prison sentence.
  • Under the new law, anyone found to be supporting or promoting LGBTQ activities might be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

 

Ravi River Flow to Pakistan Halted

  •  The completion of Shahpur-Kandi barrage has ceased the water flow of the Ravi River into Pakistan as of March 1, 2024, marking a significant milestone.
  •  Over 32000 hectares of irrigated agriculture in the Jammu and Kashmir districts of Kathua and Samba will profit tremendously from this.
  •  P V Narasimha Rao, a former prime minister, started this project in 1995. Conflicts between the governments of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir presented many obstacles.
  • India was granted exclusive rights over the Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas rivers under the 1960 Indus Water Treaty.
  •  Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab would gain from a stop to the supply of water into Pakistan.
  • This initiative is a component of India's plan to improve its capacity for managing water resources.

RBI Announced Financial Literacy Ideathon

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is observing Financial Literacy Week (FLW) in 2024 with the theme "Make a Right Start – Become Financially Smart" from February 26 to March 1, 2024.
  • In an effort to enhance financial literacy, FLW has been observed annually since 2016.This year's theme is geared toward young adults, primarily college students.
  •  Raising awareness of the benefits of establishing discipline at a young age is the goal.
  • Banks have been instructed to use the posters that the RBI has created to spread knowledge and raise awareness among the public throughout the week on the aforementioned theme.

  •  After testing positive for testosterone, the former Manchester United player was placed on temporary suspension in September 2023.
  • Following Juventus' 3-0 victory over Undines in the Italian Series An opener, there was a doping incident that resulted in Pogba's temporary suspension.
  • Paul Pogba's remarkable football career, which included accomplishments with France on the international stage, may come to an end due to the four-year ban.

Daljit Singh Chaudhary

  • Daljit Singh Chaudhary, a 1990 batch IPS officer, has been named Director General (DG) of the National Security Guard (NSG) effective March 1, 2024.
  •  Currently holding the position of DG of Sashastra Seema Bal (SB), Chaudhary will now take on the extra duty of heading the NSG, also known as the "black cats."
  •  The NSG is a federally recognized organization that focuses on counterterrorism and anti-hijacking efforts.
  • The NSG is only called upon in exceptional circumstances that have been approved by the government, and they have received extensive training to manage high-risk scenarios.
  • The nomination of Chaudhary demonstrates the government's resolve to strengthen national security protocols.

Four Day Long ‘Tawi Festival’ in Jammu and Kashmir

  • The four-day 'Tawi Festival' in Jammu and Kashmir, which showcases the region's art, culture, and tradition, began on March 1, 2024.
  • The festival this year would concentrate on promoting Jammu's rich, varied artistic legacy and will provide a venue for young people to express their creativity.
  • The festival includes talks, seminars, and workshops in addition to street theater, folk music, classical, and folk dance performances, as well as a Mela.

Food Safety Vans on Wheels in Jammu and Kashmir

  • The recently launched food safety vans on wheels (FSWs) in Jammu & Kashmir will begin operating in the Union Territory on March 1, 2024.
  • Across the Union Territory, six FSWs have been assigned to carefully chosen locations.
  • Four of these vans would cover the districts of Kathua, Samba, Reasi, and Udhampur in the Jammu division and the districts of Shopian, Pulwama, Ganderbal, and Bandipora in the Kashmir.
  • Two of these vans would serve the urban centers of Srinagar and Jammu.
  • Apart from conducting tests, these vans are required to conduct 25 training programs and 15 awareness camps with the objective of enlightening food business owners and customers alike

 

Telangana Government Introduced One Time Scheme

  • All metropolitan local authorities in Telangana, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, adopted the One Time Scheme on March 1, 2024.
  • With rising arrears interest on property tax payments, property owners are facing increasing financial burden, which this program aims to relieve.
  • Additionally, 90% of the accumulated arrears interest is waived. It demonstrated the Telangana government's proactive attitude to resolving budgetary issues.
  • It also seeks to support ULB revenue collection and lessen the financial burden on taxpayers.
