Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah

  • Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the ruler of Kuwait and a former prime minister, issued a decree nominating Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah as the country's new crown prince on June 1, 2024.
  • From 2019 - 2022, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid served as Kuwait's prime minister. It is notable that the first Crown Prince whose father has never ruled Kuwait is Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid. 
  • This is the first time the Al Hamad branch of the Mubarak dynasty of the ruling Al Sabah family has produced a crown prince.
  • The custom of choosing crown princes from the Al Jaber or Al Salem branches is broken by this new action.
