Misleading A1 and A2 Labels on Dairy Products Banned

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on August 24, 2024 announced that dairy products like milk, ghee, butter and curd should no longer carry “A1” or “A2” labels.

  • A1 and A2 refer to different types of beta-casein proteins in cow’s milk, with A1 typically found in Northern European breeds such as Holsteins, and A2 in breeds from areas like the Channel Islands, such as Guernsey cows.
  •  While some studies suggest A2 milk may be easier on digestion, the evidence is not conclusive.
  • The FSSAI aims to avoid misleading health claims due to unclear scientific evidence.
